Solid oak stair treads have that classic look that go well in any home. They can be time consuming to install, but the result is well worth it. Here are a few simple steps to follow to install them:
Stain and finish the stair treads first (doing it after installation can make it hard to live in your home during finishing process)
Stain or paint the riser material
Pull carpet and existing stair treads
Make sure that there will be less than 1/4 inch difference in the height of all the stairs (some shimming may be necessary)
Cut the first stair tread (should not be cut tight but keep it within 1/16 inch of the sides if possible)
Apply a generous bead of heavy duty construction adhesive to the stair frame(stringer) and then attach the tread with finish nails(pre drill) or with a power nailer
repeat for successive steps
If there is a landing, it should be installed with 3/4 inch hardwood with a stair nosing (it is the landings and the top and bottom step where you will probably need to shim the treads to match the heights)
If you used unfinished wood for the landing, sand, stain and finish it now
Cut and install the risers
Caulk, Putty nail holes, and clean up
Apply a final coat of finish if desired
All finished. Sounds simple, right?
